Company Overview
Irradiant Technologies is commercializing a novel platform for high throughput 3D nanofabrication of optics and photonic systems. Our process allows us to pattern large index gradients, up to an index contrast comparable to glass in air, with nanoscale resolution and in arbitrary 3D geometries. Irradiant’s platform will revolutionize the way optical components are designed, manufactured, assembled, and packaged – dramatically simplifying the supply chain while enabling previously impossible components.
Job Description
We are seeking an Optical Packaging Engineer who can develop our capabilities around packaging complex optical components into compact, robust, and manufacturable products. As an Optical Packaging Engineer, you will play a critical role in bridging the gap between making individual parts to create fully functional and robust products with low loss. This hands-on role involves a combination of optics, materials, mechanical engineering, and precision alignment. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing packaging solutions that ensure the performance, reliability, and scalability of our cutting-edge optical devices.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of optical packaging solutions for complex 3D nanoscale optical devices. This includes coupling fabricated devices with external fibers and/or PICs.
- Collaborate closely with optical designers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing teams to create integrated packaging systems that meet stringent optical and mechanical specifications.
- Perform thermal, mechanical, and environmental analysis of optical packages to ensure reliability and durability.
- Develop and optimize assembly processes for the high-precision alignment and bonding of optical components.
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to source materials, components, and tools necessary for packaging and assembly.
- Contribute to the development of new techniques and technologies for the packaging of next-generation optical devices.
- Document designs, processes, and test results, ensuring alignment with industry standards and best practices.
Qualifications
- Proven experience working with high-precision systems. Optical alignment and packaging experience preferred.
- A strong understanding of relevant optical, mechanical, and thermal principles.
- Experience with CAD tools for mechanical design and simulation (e.g., SolidWorks, COMSOL).
- Knowledge of materials science as it relates to packaging, including adhesives, coatings, and substrates.
- Ability to work effectively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
Additional Information
This role offers the unique opportunity to be part of a passionate team that is pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible in photonic devices. Your expertise and enthusiasm will be crucial in shaping the culture and operational best practices of our startup as we continue to grow. We look forward to seeing how you can help us illuminate the path to a brighter future.
